Let’s Try to Understand “Rate of Reaction”

Let’s try to understand the factors affecting the rate of a chemical reaction.

We are going to check three factors: concentration, temperature, and surface area.

We are doing an experiment of Acetic acid available in vinegar with the Sodium bicarbonate of baking soda.

Acidic Acid (Ch3COOH) + Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) -> CO2 (Carbon dioxide) + H2O (Water) + CH3COONa (Sodium Acetate)

What do we need?

  • 1-100 ml Bottle as a container to measure
  • 3-500 ml/600 ml used bottle
  • 7- medium sized balloon
  • 125 ml vinegar
  • 30 grams baking soda (approx 6 spoons)
  • 1 meter long ruler/scale

Procedure:

First Activity:

->Measure 25 ml Vinegar with the help of a 100 ml measuring bottle and pour it into the three 500/600 ml bottles.

 ->Take 25 ml water with the help of a 100 ml measuring bottle and pour it into the second bottle of vinegar.

->Take 50 ml water with the help of a 100 ml measuring bottle and pour it into the third bottle of vinegar.

->Take one tbsp (tablespoon) baking soda and put it in three balloons.

->Cover the bottle with the balloon in a way that baking soda drops into the solution of the bottles.

->Start the stopwatch and note the time when you see the balloons inflating (in each case).

->Measure the height of the inflated balloon and the time when balloons stop inflating (in each case).

->And write your observations.

Second Activity:

-> Empty the bottles of vinegar.

->Pour 25 ml vinegar in one bottle again.

->This time take two tbsp. baking soda and put it in one balloon.

->Cover the bottle with the balloon in a way that baking soda gets into the bottle.

->Start the stopwatch and note down the time when the balloon starts inflating and stops inflating.

->Measure the height of the inflated balloon.

->And write your observations.

Activity three:

->Heat the 25 ml vinegar for less than a minute and pour in one bottle (it should not melt the bottle).

->Take one tbsp. baking soda in one balloon

->Cover the bottle with the balloon in a way that baking soda drops into the solution of the bottle.

->Start the stopwatch and note down the time when the balloon starts and stops inflating.

->Measure the height of the inflated balloon.

->And write your observations

->How was your precipitate of Sodium acetate?

Choose one of these activities and don’t forget to record the video of your activity.
